INTERBERING - Bering Strait tunnel project gets promotional website by Alaska Dispatch 2012-03-29

In his opinion article, "Any Future Bering Strait Railway Must Start with Anchorage," Fyodor Soloview argues that a future rail connection between Eurasia and North America through a Bering Strait tunnel must reflect Alaska’s geography, population centers, and transportation needs. He proposes Anchorage and the Mat-Su region as the central transportation hub for a future high-speed intercontinental railway. The article explores potential routes through Alaska, connections to Canada, customs facilities at Port MacKenzie, and the long-term economic benefits the corridor could bring to the state. Bering Strait tunnel: pipe dream or game-changer for U.S.–Russia–China ties?

Léon Loïcq de Lobel was a French engineer, explorer, and early megaproject promoter whose name became closely linked to the first serious international attempt to advance a Bering Strait fixed link. Between 1898 and 1907, he pursued a transcontinental scheme to connect North America and Eurasia by rail via Canada, Alaska, Chukotka, and the Trans-Siberian Railway — including tunnels toward the Diomede Islands as the natural midpoint between the continents. John Arthur Lynch: An Early Advocate of a Bering Strait Connection. Irish-born American lawyer and Civil War officer John Arthur Lynch (ca. 1828-1900) was among the earliest documented promoters of transportation links between North America and Asia through Alaska and the Bering Strait region. Working from Washington, D.C., he petitioned Congress to investigate routes toward Russia, Japan, and China. His advocacy prompted an 1886 Senate bill and federal review, helping establish the Alaska-Asia transportation concept in the official U.S. record decades before detailed bridge and tunnel proposals emerged.

The late Alaska Governor Walter Hickel may be about to have a short stretch of expressway named after him, but another one of his pet "big ideas" is trying to take another step toward potential reality.

Hickel championed the idea of building a transportation, pipeline and communication tunnel across the Bering Strait, first conceived by Tsar Nicholas II in 1905. The idea made little headway during the Cold War, but lately it's back .

And according to a press release , Fyodor Soloview, an Anchorage businessman, is carrying on Hickel's vision.

Soloview has launched a company and a new website to promote just such a project, educate the public about its potential benefits, and attract investors interested in getting in on the ground floor of a project he says will transform the world as we know it, much as the tunnel beneath the English Channel transformed Europe.

"The Eurotunnel's success proves the potential in joining land masses with rail services carrying people and trade across borders," says Soloview. "And in all the world there is perhaps no more obvious opportunity to bring together natural resources and ready markets—than Alaska's Bering Straits."

The cost? According to InterBering, new railroads would need to be built on both sides of a tunnel, estimated to cost up to $70 billion, and the tunnel itself could cost up to $30 billion.

But it would be worth it, argues Soloview. Tens of thousands of jobs, a new shipping route for natural resources and finished goods, and a big bite taken out of Alaska's relative economic isolation.
